Thursday Morning Reflection on Saraswati Jayanti 2016

My dear students,

Maataa Saraswati is the Goddess of Knowledge, learning and the fine Arts. She sits on a swan. It is believed that this swan has the power to separate milk from water. If there is a mixture of milk and water, this swan can drink the milk only and leave the water. This swan is symbolic of our discriminating power. For us to get the knowledge we have to make the right choices in our lives. The universe will always present us we choices. The choices will not be easy choices. These choices will be like the mixture of milk and water. It will not be an easy thing to separate the correct choice from the incorrect choice, but we have to make the effort.

I pray that Maataa Saraswati will bless us so that we will make the right choices and progress in our lives.
Thursday Morning Religious reflection 21st January, 2016

Once there was a young man walking along a river bank. After some time, he stopped to stare at what was happening in the river. In the river was a holy man who was trying to save a scorpion. The scorpion was on a piece of a dry branch. If the holy man left the scorpion, its death by drowning was certain. Unfortunately, each time the holy person would attempt to rescue the scorpion it would sting him and he would drop it back on the branch. After watching this for some time the young man called out to the holy person. He asked him why he did not leave the scorpion to its fate.

The holy man replied that the nature of the scorpion is to sting and it is remaining true to its nature. He then said my nature is to be good and help others, if a scorpion is remaining true to its nature why should I give up mine.

My dear students, our nature is to be good. We cannot allow ourselves to be influenced by the negative things of the world. When we do things that are not good e.g. disobey rules we make ourselves unhappy. This is because deep within we know it is not right. The formula of life is simple, when we do good and help others we feel good and we are happy.

Talk (Pravachan) given by Pt. R. Maharaj to students on the occassion of Makar Sankranti 2016

Makar Sankranti refers to the apparent northerly movement of the Sun. This is caused by the movement of the earth around the sun. It signals the start of a very auspicious time that lasts for approximately six months.

The earth and everything on it is always moving. As you read this the earth is rotating causing day and night. It is also orbiting around the sun. On the earth the continents move at the speed at which your fingernails grow. The tiny particles that make solid objects are also not static. All of creation is constantly on the move.

The activity of the creation is very attractive to us. Everyone wants to know what is going on. What is the latest score in the cricket or football match? Did you see that post on Facebook? Did you see the movie with Shahrukh Khan? Did you hear the price of food went up?

We have to learn from the sun. The sun has self-discipline. The sun always performs its duty and does not get caught up in the constant movement around it. What will happen if the sun stops shining and starts to do other things?  In the same manner we also have our duty to perform. When we are in a class we have to pay attention to the teacher and do our work. Do not get distracted by the others around you. Perform your duty.

You will get happiness when you perform your duty. Whatever is your duty in this world, whether you are a student, teacher or prime minister once you work sincerely and honestly you will be happy. This is a secret about life. When you do the right things you are rewarded with happiness. This happiness is a message from Bhagwaan (God) that you are on the right path.

Do not worry about others who are not doing the right things. You do the right thing and make yourself happy. In this way you will make the world a better place.

Makar Sankranti

Makar Sankranti will be celebrated on Thursday 14th January, 2016
Surya Devta

What is Makar Sankranti?

Makar Sankranti is the day on which Surya Devta enters the Raashi of Makar or the house of Capricorn. During this time, due to the tilt in the axis of the earth and its elliptical orbit around the Sun there is the illusion of a northward movement of the Sun. In reality, the Northern Hemisphere of the earth is tilted towards the Sun. This is referred to as Surya Uttarayan. Surya Uttarayan is a very auspicious time for Hindus that lasts for about six months. During Uttarayan Vivah Sanskaars (Weddings), Upanayan Sanskaars (Janew, Guru Initiation) and many auspicious rituals and activities are done.
