Makar Sankranti
Makar Sankranti will be celebrated on Thursday 14th January, 2016
Surya Devta
What is Makar Sankranti?
Makar Sankranti is the
day on which Surya Devta enters the Raashi of Makar or the house of Capricorn.
During this time, due to the tilt in the axis of the earth and its elliptical orbit around the Sun there is the illusion of
a northward movement of the Sun. In reality, the Northern Hemisphere of the
earth is tilted towards the Sun. This is referred to as Surya Uttarayan. Surya
Uttarayan is a very auspicious time for Hindus that lasts for about six months.
During Uttarayan Vivah Sanskaars (Weddings), Upanayan Sanskaars (Janew, Guru
Initiation) and many auspicious rituals and activities are done.
