Pitri Paksh in Trinidad and Tobago

Pitri Paksh or Pitri Paksh Shraadh is the rites and rituals offered to our dear departed ones every year. This year in Trinidad and Tobago Pitri Paksh Shraadh begins on September 5, 2009 and ends on September 18, 2009. This corresponds to the Krishna paksh period of the month of Ashwin in the Hindu calendar. The Shraadh performed during the Pitri Paksh is highly auspicious because it reaches our dear departed ones immediately.

In Trinidad and Tobago kush grass is placed and everyday water together with black till is offered in a southerly direction with an appropriate prayer or mantra. During the pitri paksh, the pitri puja is done. This should be done by a qualified pandit.

Saraswati Jayanti

Saraswati Jayanti is also called Basant Panchmi. Basant means spring season. Panchmi is the 5th tithi in a lunar month, in this case the fifth day of the month of Maagh (January – February).

This is the anniversary of the appearance of Maataa Saraswati. Many people refer to it as the birthday of Maataa Saraswati, but there is no birth or death for the Devi. He who is born must die so, how can Maataa Saraswati be born? This is the day when Bhagwaan took a form to assist us in education. On this day Maataa Saraswati is worshipped by all students. It is a very auspicious day to start education as well.

Basant Panchmi or Saraswati Jayanti is celebrated throughout Trinidad and Tobago. Saraswati Puja is done, and then musical instruments, books and writing instruments are blessed. Sometimes a musical concert is organized in the night. This year, Basant Panchmi or Saraswati Jayanti will be celebrated on Wednesday 20th January, 2010.
